HBO’s Task has officially wrapped up its first season — and fans are already wondering whether the gripping crime drama will return for more. Over the course of seven intense episodes, the series follows FBI Agent Tom Brandis (played by Mark Ruffalo) as he hunts down a robber targeting stash houses belonging to a violent biker gang. With a mix of bloodshed, suspense, and moral complexity, the show delivered a satisfying yet open-ended finale — leaving many curious about what comes next.
But will there be a Task Season 2?
‘Task’ Was Created as a Limited Series — But HBO Could Still Change Course
Task was created by Brad Ingelsby, the mind behind Mare of Easttown, another acclaimed HBO crime drama set in suburban Philadelphia. Like Mare, Task has been billed as a limited series, which typically means the story concludes after one season. However, HBO has a history of reviving its successful limited series when fan demand and ratings justify it — as seen with Big Little Lies and True Detective.
Given Task’s strong critical reception and audience response, there’s a faint possibility that HBO could revisit that decision. Still, whether that happens depends heavily on Ingelsby himself.
In an interview with Esquire, Ingelsby admitted that he’d “love to have a chance to do another season of Task,” but stopped short of confirming any development. “If people respond to Task and keep responding to Task, I’d love to tell more stories about this place, because I love writing about this place,” he said, referring to his native Delaware County.
He added that Task deeply resonated with locals. “Listen, I live here in Chester County. I could throw a stone and hit Delco. It’s literally across the street,” Ingelsby told Esquire. “There’s a vested interest from people in this community to watch the show.”
A Crossover With ‘Mare of Easttown’? Fans Are Hoping So
One of the most intriguing possibilities is a crossover between Task and Mare of Easttown. In fact, Ingelsby has already teased that the two shows exist in the same universe.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he said: “They exist in the same world, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mare walked into a Wawa that Tom was in. I don’t have a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.”
The first episode of Task even subtly connects it to Mare of Easttown, sparking speculation that future instalments could bring Detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) and Agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) together on screen — a pairing that would thrill fans of both series.
What Could Season 2 Look Like?
If renewed, Task Season 2 could follow Tom Brandis as he takes on a new FBI case — possibly delving deeper into the moral and emotional struggles that define Ingelsby’s storytelling. While Task wrapped up its main plot, Tom’s survival and continued career in the FBI leave the door open for new investigations.
However, Ingelsby’s approach tends to focus on character-driven closure rather than extending stories for the sake of plot. His previous series, Mare of Easttown, ended conclusively despite calls for a sequel. This could mean Task will remain a one-season wonder — unless Ingelsby finds a fresh story worth telling.
Who Could Return?
Most of the main cast met grim fates in Season 1, making returns from Tom Pelphrey (Robbie), Alison Oliver (Lizzie Stover), and Raúl Castillo (Cliff Broward) unlikely — except through flashbacks.
That said, Mark Ruffalo could reprise his role as Tom Brandis if production moves forward, though scheduling may be a challenge. The actor is currently juggling multiple projects, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Good Sex, and Crime 101, according to IMDb.
Where to Watch ‘Task’
All seven episodes of Task Season 1 are now streaming exclusively on HBO Max, where viewers can dive into one of 2025’s most compelling crime dramas.
Final Verdict
For now, Task remains a standalone limited series — but the story’s universe, its critical success, and Brad Ingelsby’s passion for exploring life in Delaware County suggest that the door isn’t completely closed. Whether through Task Season 2, a crossover, or a new story in the same world, fans may not have seen the last of Tom Brandis just yet.
