Viewers Divided Over ‘Cop-Out’ Twist and Wild Guesses on ITV’s The Masked Singer

ITV’s The Masked Singer returned with a bang on Saturday night (January 4), kicking off its sixth season with elaborate costumes, intriguing clues, and a controversial new twist that left many fans frustrated. Hosted by Joel Dommett, the episode featured judges Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and newcomer Maya Jama, alongside special guest judge Sir Mo Farah. However, the big reveal fans had eagerly awaited was delayed, sparking a wave of complaints online.

The episode saw six masked celebrities – Dressed Crab, Spag Bol, Snail, Tattoo, Teeth, and Kingfisher – take the stage with dazzling performances. But the format shake-up came when Spag Bol, who landed in the bottom two alongside Teeth, was not unmasked. Instead, Dommett announced that fans would have to tune in to Sunday’s episode to see Spag Bol’s true identity.

Fans React to the Cliffhanger

The decision to withhold the unmasking drew ire from fans on social media. One viewer vented on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “AN HOUR AND HALF OF THIS for NO UNMASKING? What a flamin joke.” Another quipped, “Masked Singer UK NOT OK!” Many called the twist a “cop-out,” expressing disappointment at the lack of resolution in the first episode.

Teeth’s Identity Sparks Wild Speculation

Despite the twist, the night wasn’t short on speculation. Teeth, who performed a spirited rendition of Tony Christie’s Is This The Way to Amarillo, became a focal point for fans and judges alike. The clue package included phrases like “I’ve always been a big mouth,” “I’ve bitten off more than I can chew,” and “going for gold,” leaving viewers buzzing with theories.

Maya Jama guessed comedian Rob Beckett, while Jonathan Ross suggested either Rylan Clark or Alan Carr. Davina McCall, convinced that Teeth was a woman, proposed Alex Scott, and Mo Gilligan threw out the name Jimmy Bullard. Fans on X had their own theories, with one user confidently linking the clues to Alan Carr, citing his braces as a child and his association with Great Yarmouth.

Other Performers Keep Fans Guessing

The judges also made bold guesses for other performers. Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan was widely speculated to be behind Snail due to the Bridgerton-inspired visuals in the clue package. Meanwhile, Kingfisher’s identity sparked debate, with Maya Jama suggesting Harry Redknapp and Jonathan Ross floating names like Chris Packham and Alan Titchmarsh.

A Guest Judge’s Surprise Reveal

The episode wasn’t entirely devoid of unmasking. Giant Joel, a caricature mask of host Dommett from the Boxing Day special, was revealed to be Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah. His unveiling delighted the audience, and he joined the judging panel for the night.

As fans gear up for Sunday’s episode to finally unmask Spag Bol, the excitement and speculation surrounding this season of The Masked Singer show no signs of slowing down. Tune in at 6:30 PM on ITV1 for more twists, reveals, and entertaining performances.
