UK to Get Extra Bank Holiday in 2025 to Mark 80 Years Since WWII

The UK may soon have an additional Bank Holiday in 2025 to honor the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The proposed plan includes a four-day weekend, with celebrations highlighting key historical milestones from the war.

Celebrations Around VE and VJ Day

The commemorations are expected to focus on two pivotal dates:

  • Victory in Europe (VE) Day: Marking May 8, 1945, when Germany surrendered, signaling the end of conflict in Europe.
  • Victory over Japan (VJ) Day: Observed on August 15, 1945, when Japan’s defeat ended the war globally.

Reports suggest the extra Bank Holiday could either be observed between May 9 and 12 or merged with the August 25 summer Bank Holiday for a long weekend.

Widespread Public Support

The idea of a new Bank Holiday has gained significant backing from the public. A poll conducted by the Mirror newspaper revealed:

  • 73% of respondents support the introduction of the holiday.
  • 13% oppose the idea.

The poll also highlighted concerns about generational awareness, with 66% of participants feeling that younger people lack sufficient knowledge about the sacrifices made during WWII.

Honoring WWII Veterans

Organizations supporting veterans are enthusiastic about the proposal. Dick Goodwin, Vice President of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, stated:

“We are looking forward to celebrating with the remaining Second World War heroes—they deserve Britain’s gratitude and respect for their courage and sacrifice. We stand ready to help make the celebrations special.”

Government’s Commitment to Commemorations

The UK Government has already shown its dedication to marking the anniversaries. A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said:

“The 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day will be moments of huge significance for our country, and the Government is committed to commemorating the occasions appropriately. That is why we have announced more than £10 million for events.”

A Moment of Reflection and Education

In addition to celebrating the contributions of WWII veterans, the extra Bank Holiday could serve as an opportunity to educate younger generations about the conflict’s legacy. By highlighting the courage and sacrifices of those who fought, the nation hopes to bridge the gap in historical understanding and foster gratitude among future generations.

Further details about the proposed Bank Holiday and accompanying events are expected in the coming months.
