Van Gerwen Outclasses Rydz in Epic Encounter

Three-time champion Michael van Gerwen edged past the unseeded Callan Rydz 5-3 in a fiercely contested quarter-final. Rydz, who had not dropped a set throughout the tournament until this stage, showcased remarkable consistency by firing 17 180s, taking his tournament tally to 43. However, Van Gerwen’s class shone through in critical moments.

The Dutchman averaged 103.10 and hit 14 maximums of his own, maintaining composure in a match where neither competitor averaged below 103.59 after the fifth set. Despite Rydz’s phenomenal efforts, including an average of 103.88 and a 46.15% checkout rate, Van Gerwen sealed the victory with a decisive performance in the final set.

“To be part of games like this gives you a lot of joy,” Van Gerwen said. “He kept putting pressure on me, but I found a way to win. My game is in a good place, but we’re only in the semi-finals—it doesn’t mean anything yet.”

Van Gerwen now sets his sights on a fourth world title, having last lifted the trophy in 2019.

Dobey Stuns Price in Career-Defining Match

Chris Dobey staged an incredible comeback to defeat 2021 champion Gerwyn Price 5-3, marking his maiden appearance in the semi-finals. After losing the first two sets, Dobey regrouped to win four consecutive sets, averaging an impressive 113 in the third as he began to find his rhythm.

The Englishman’s resilience was tested as he missed five match darts, briefly evoking memories of last year’s quarter-final collapse against Rob Cross. However, Dobey steadied himself and clinched victory with a spectacular double-double finish on the 18s.

“I’ve never been so nervous throwing for a winning double,” Dobey admitted. “Last year was on my mind, but I told myself to keep going. I’m just pleased I found a way to win.”

Price, who started strong, faltered with missed doubles at critical junctures, allowing Dobey to capitalize and surge to victory.

Semi-Final Showdowns Set

Van Gerwen and Dobey will clash in what promises to be a high-octane semi-final, while teenager Luke Littler faces Nathan Aspinall and two-time champion Peter Wright takes on Stephen Bunting in the other quarter-finals on Wednesday evening.

As the competition heats up, fans can expect more thrilling encounters as these darting titans battle for the coveted world title.
